 Farm Tours of Belchertown

Austin Brothers Valley Farm; Gray Craig Farm; Green Diamond Tree Farm; Greene Acres Equestrian Center; NESFI: New England Small Farm Institute (including Stone Soup Farm, Farmacy Gardens, White Oak Organic Farm);Sentinel Farm; Woodcock Farm; Stone House Museum.

On Saturday, August 13th, the Belchertown Historical Association hosted this year’s Living History Days, featuring: Farm Tours of Belchertown.  We captured the theme of Belchertown’s anniversary year by celebrating its history through farming.  The tour included seven local farms and the gardens on the Stone House grounds.  While touring the farms, visitors were treated to sights that included llamas, alpacas, sheep, chickens, orchards, fiber arts, hayrides, saw mills, and many more fascinating elements that encompass Belchertown’s farm life.  Our many thanks to all the families and friends that opened their farms to us for this historic year’s event.

The Stone House museum was open for tours,  our 19th century flower garden was in full glory and many enjoyed the fruits of Peg and Lew Louraine’s hard work: an expanded vegetable and herb garden.

On Saturday, July 10th we held our Living History Day Activities, including our 4th Annual Garden Tour.  This year’s tour featured nine superb gardens. Visitors were able to see an alpaca farm with lots of organic things going on,  gardens planted on stone tiers, and unique plantings of trees and shrubs. There were sun gardens, shade gardens and everything in between. A monsoon of rain slowed things down mid-day, but when the sun appeared again, so did the garden lovers. The Belchertown Antique Car Club came out to display their cars for us, along with the small engine club that came last year. Volunteers set up our Old Bags Sale and some of our local crafters came out to help us. Thanks to all who were able to volunteer their time to help make this a successful fundraiser, especially to those gardeners who opened their gardens to us. There will not be a garden tour next summer. The trustees are planning a weekend of activities for August to finish out the year celebrating Belchertown’s 250th birthday.
